About

Reimagine beach waste as art - a Crafting Workshop with Síle Walsh

On Monday, 25 August 2025, join creative practitioner Síle Walsh for a hands-on afternoon that begins with a short walk along the shoreline to scavenge materials—ghost nets, driftwood, plastics, and other washed-up finds. As we walk, you’ll be introduced to the hidden world of seagrass ecosystems, their local significance, and the role they play in supporting marine life and protecting our coasts.

Back at T-Bay, near Molly’s Café, we will move into a creative making session. Síle will guide participants in tapestry and weaving techniques using the collected materials, turning what was once waste into sculptural forms that reflect both the wonder and vulnerability of seagrass habitats.

This will be a collaborative process: each participant’s work will become part of a collective piece to be showcased alongside Tasneem Khan’s seagrass photography in the Seagrass Sessions Exhibition at the Coastguard Cultural Centre during the Vitamin Sea Festival in September.

All materials will be provided, but you are welcome to bring your own beach finds to weave into the work.

Seagrass Sessions invites Waterford communities to explore, document, and celebrate our hidden seagrass meadows off Tramore. Through workshops, storytelling, and public events, we’ll deepen our connection to this vital ecosystem and inspire local climate action.

This project is funded by Creative Ireland and Waterford County Council.
