About
Readings by the River is a curated riverside reading group for local artists and creative practitioners, exploring waterways, creative flow and ecological imagination. The event takes the form of three gatherings, taking place across April, May and June at the Tea Houses gallery in Kilkenny. Facilitated by ecologist / artist Tasneem Khan and eco-art curator Shannon Carroll, it is presented as part of the [K]Nore Your River season of river encounters.
Each session centres on a carefully selected sequence of readings. Spanning poetry, essays and book excerpts which will be shared with all participants in advance of each gathering. Together, these texts form a living conversation across disciplines, inviting individuals into a space of slow attention, listening and reflection.
Each gathering unfolds through a different kind of shared exchange. Guided by Tasneem and Shannon, sessions will include interactive activities such as reading, discussion and writing, to waking, quiet contemplation and water-centred meditative practices. Participants are also invited to respond creatively between sessions, collecting or creating small found objects that resonate with the themes explored each month.
The series offers both a gentle and generative space to connect with others, deepen artistic practice, and engage with the river as both site and source.
This initiative is being funded and supported by the Kilkenny Arts Office as part of the Artist Connect grant 2026.
