SEA School is a mobile learning centre for Science, Ecology and the Arts.

Based in Dunmore East, Ireland, we convert coves into classrooms all across the sunny south-east.

Through environmental activities, citizen science, field exploration and workshops, SEA School builds community-centric knowledge in coastal and marine systems.

In 2014, Ned O'Sullivan told the Irish senate (Seanad) that seagulls had 'lost the run of themselves' in Dublin. The following year, another suggested a cull of the "vicious" seabirds.

While it may be true that gulls are acting more boisterous, this is likely due to reduced traditional food sources due to climate change and over-fishing.

So, take a look at our little guide, you never know when it might help you identify which gull flies off with your lunch...

Let's talk about Samphire: Rock, Golden & Marsh🌿

While they share the name “Samphire,” these coastal plants are different from each other in habitat, flavor, and even plant families.

Did you know? The name “Samphire” comes from the French Saint Pierre (St. Peter), patron saint of fishermen, and is a generic term used for several maritime species. Let’s compare these fascinating "samphires":

1. Rock Samphire
Latin Name: Crithmum maritimum
Irish Name: Craobhraic
Habitat: Found along rocky shores & cliffs.
Taste: Aromatic and salty, with hints of citrus. Often pickled or used as a garnish in seafood dishes.
Edible? Yes! though its pungent taste is an acquired one.

2. Golden Samphire
Latin Name: Limbarda crithmoides
Irish Name: Ailleann Pheadair
Habitat: Grows on salt marshes and tidal zones, primarily along the south and southeast coasts of Ireland.
Taste: Mildly salty with a slight bitterness.
Edible? Yes, The young shoots, leaves and flower buds are edible. But golden samphire is less commonly foraged.

3. Marsh Samphire (Glasswort)
Latin Name: Salicornia europaea
Irish Name: Cnámhluc
Habitat: Thrives in salt marshes, mudflats, and estuaries, especially along the south and west coasts.
Taste: Salty and crisp. Delicious steamed, sautéed, or raw in salads- commonly paired with fish.
Edible? Yes! Popular and known as a culinary delicacy.

If foraging for marsh samphire, to ensure that you don’t damage the plant- Treat it like a ‘cut-and-come-again plant’, just take off the tender green tops and leave the tougher yellow-brown stalks.

All of these "samphires" are halophytes—plants adapted to salty environments. Their thick, succulent leaves store water to survive dry, exposed habitats, while their roots anchor into rocky crevices, stabilising fragile coastal ecosystems.

Deciding whether to have a child is an emotionally fraught and deeply personal process. Deciding amid increasingly dire warnings for the planet makes it even more paralysing. The Climate Baby Dilemma explores the state of what to expect when you’re expecting climate change.

With the future promising to be increasingly unstable and insecure, conversations about parenthood are heating up. Over the course of three years, the film follows prominent science writer Britt Wray, as she delves further into this complex issue - hosting workshops, giving talks, and speaking to activists, psychologists, parents and prospective parents.

The film also meets many youth at the centre of the climate moment. A growing number of Gen-Z and millennials are either refusing to bring a child into an increasingly unstable world or struggling with the question of whether they should.
Those deciding to have children, while being very climate aware - like activists Sarain Fox and Severn Suzuki - offer perspectives and lessons for raising children in the climate crisis.

Through her research, Britt considers how one can transform climate anxiety and grief into transformative action. For many, the best antidote to feeling powerless is activism – and that can take many forms, including the decision not to have a child.

🌊 Common Irish Wrack Species 🌊
Seaweed is more than the smelly thing on our coasts! Seaweed is a collective name for marine algae belonging to three groups: red (Rhodophyta), green (Chlorophyta), and brown (Phaeophyta) algae.

Wrack species are the most common brown seaweed species in Ireland, found mainly in the intertidal region, protecting shorelines, providing habitats for marine life, and are even used in agriculture and biomedicine.

Seaweeds grow between 3 zones on our shore, the upper, middle and lower. Different species are found at different zones, e.g, Serrated Wrack on the lower shore, Channelled Wrack on the upper shore and Bladder Wrack on the middle shore.

The primary biomass of Wracks come from Fucus sp., Pelvetia sp., and Ascophyllum sp. While Fucus and Pelvetia have been grazed by or fed to animals for centuries, Ascophyllum nodosum (Egg Wrack), is the most economically important. In Ireland, it is found coast-wide but is most abundant along the West.

Let’s explore 6 common Irish Wrack species:

Bladder Wrack (Fucus vesiculosus)
Easily recognized by its air-filled bladders along flattened fronds, this seaweed forms mats on the middle shore.

Serrated Wrack (Fucus serratus)
This species has jagged edges along its fronds, making it easy to I.D on the lower shore. Our Coast-xplorers might recognise this one as the species we use for our famous seaweed slime!

Spiral Wrack (Fucus spiralis)
Recognised by its spiralled fronds, it thrives in rocky areas exposed to the air.

Guiry’s Wrack (Fucus guiry)
A rarer find, this wrack is characterised by its flattened, strap-shaped fronds.

Channelled Wrack (Pelvetia canaliculata)
Adapted to life on the upper shore, this wrack has channel-like fronds that retain water, allowing it to survive up to 8 days out of water. It does not have bladders like a lot of wracks.

Egg Wrack (Ascophyllum nodosum)
Its thick, olive-green fronds are dotted with egg shaped bladders, making it unmistakable on sheltered shores.

Ireland’s shores are a treasure trove of wrack species. Next time you’re by the sea, take a closer look and try to I.D these amazing algae!

We were delighted to conduct a range of workshops with adults, schools and interest groups!

To collaboratively explore how science deepens our connection to County Wexford’s landscapes!

This interactive workshop examined local habitats—from coastal shores to ancient woodlands—through the lens of ecology, combining memory mapping and community discussion.

We discovered the unseen systems that sustain these habitats and their importance to our future. Perfect for anyone interested in the intersection of science and society.

Also known as Cliff Clover or Sea-pink, Sea Thrift is often found clinging to rocky cliffs and salty shores. This resilient coastal plant thrives where few others can, with vibrant pink blooms that brighten Ireland’s coastal landscapes from April to July- A familiar site to anyone who lives by the coast!
